چکیده

We use a set of high-resolution N-body simulations of binary galaxy mergers to show that the morphologies of the tidal features that are seen around a large fraction of nearby, massive ellipticals in the field, cannot be reproduced by equalmass dissipationless mergers; rather, they are well explained by the accretion of disk-dominated galaxies. In particular, the armand loop-like morphologies of the observed tidal debris can only be produced by the kinematically-cold material of the disk components of the accreted galaxies. The tidal features that arise from such ”cold-accretion” events onto a massive elliptical are visible for significantly longer timescales than the features produced by elliptical-elliptical mergers (about 1-2 Gyr vs. a few hundred million years). Mass ratios of order 1 : 10 between the accreting elliptical and the accreted disk are sufficient to match the brightness of the observed debris. Furthermore, stellar population synthesis models and simple order of magnitude calculations indicate that the colors of the tidal features generated in such minor cold-accretion events are relatively red, in agreement with the observations. The minor cold-accretion events that explain the presence, brightness and structural and color properties of the tidal debris, cause only a modest mass and luminosity increase in the accreting massive elliptical. These results, coupled with the relative statistical frequencies of diskand bulge-dominated galaxies in the field, imply that the most massive ellipticals assemble well before their tidal debris forms through the accretion of relatively little, kinematically-cold material, rather than in very recent, dissipationless major mergers. Are Red Tidal Features Unequivocal Signatures of Major Dry Mergers?

We use a cosmological numerical simulation to study the tidal features produced by a minor merger with an elliptical galaxy. We find that the simulated tidal features are quantitatively similar to the red tidal features, i.e., dry tidal features, recently found in deep images of elliptical galaxies at intermediate redshifts. The minor merger in our simulation does not trigger star formation due...

The Recent and Continuing Assembly of Field Ellipticals by Red Mergers

We present a study of tidal debris associated with 126 nearby red galaxies, selected from the 1.2 degree2 Multiwavelength Survey by Yale-Chile (MUSYC) and the 9.3 degree2 NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey. In the full sample 67 galaxies (53 %) show morphological signatures of tidal interactions, consisting of broad fans of stars, tails, and other asymmetries at very faint surface brightness levels. W...

Formation of a Spiral Galaxy in a Major Merger

We use numerical simulations to examine the structure of merger remnants resulting from collisions of gas-rich spiral galaxies. When the gas fraction of the progenitors is small, the remnants structurally and kinematically resemble elliptical galaxies, in agreement with earlier work. However, if the progenitor disks are gas-dominated, new types of outcomes are possible. In fact, we show that a ...

The Dynamical Evolution of Galaxies in Clusters

The evolution of galaxies is driven strongly by dynamical processes including internal instabilities, tidal interactions and mergers. The cluster environment is a useful laboratory for studying these effects. I present recent results on simulations of interacting populations of spiral and elliptical galaxies in the cosmological collapse of a cluster, showing the formation of the central, bright...

Isophotal Structure and Dust Distribution in Radio-loud Elliptical Galaxies

We investigate isophotal properties and dust morphology in the nuclear regions of 84 radio galaxies, imaged in the optical and near-infrared as part of Hubble Space Telescope snapshot surveys. We present a sample-wide trend between host galaxy isophotal structure and the inclination of dusty circumnuclear disks at the centers of 13 of these objects. We find that galaxies containing edge-on disk...
